What is Organic?

A definition into ‘what’ Organic is from The Department for Agriculture and Rural Affairs (DEFRA);

‘Organic food is the product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides; growth regulators and livestock feed additives. Irradiation and the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by organic legislation.

Organic agriculture is a systems approach to production that is working towards environmentally, socially and economically sustainable production. Instead, the agricultural systems rely on crop rotation, animal and plant manures, some hand weeding and biological pest control’.

Why does this matter, the benefits of Organic?

1. More nutritious food.

Organic foods are richer in certain nutrients. Results of a 2016 European study show that levels of certain nutrients, vitamins and minerals are 50% higher compared to those conventionally farmed

2. Organic produce contains no nasty additives.

Many health problems have been linked to additives included in our food. Organically certified means absolutely no additives including hydrogenated fats, aspartame, monosodium glutamate and all artificial colourings, flavourings and sweeteners. If your food product ingredients list contains long words you can’t pronounce is likely to be additives and fillers.

3. Organic farming is better for the environment.

Harmful chemicals are not used in organic farming, there is minimal soil, air, and water pollution and less energy used; thus, ensuring a safer and healthier world for future generations to live in.

4. Good for animals.

Care for animals is an integral part of organic standards. Organically raised animals are NOT given antibiotics, growth hormones, or fed animal by-products and are reared in open spaces and not in a cage.

5. Good for wildlife.

Less pollution from harmful sprays means better biodiversity especially for birds, insects, butterflies etc.

6. Organic food is GMO-free.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) foods are plants whose DNA has been altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding, most commonly in order to be resistant to pesticides or produce an insecticide.

7. Organic produce contains fewer pesticides.

Chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat. Farming without pesticides is also better for nearby birds and animals as well as people who live close to farms.

8. Better for pollinators.

We know that bees are in trouble and keepers lose 30% each winter. A major contributor to bee death is exposure to pesticides sprayed in conventional farming. Organic farming provides more diverse habitat and food sources for pollinators.

9. High standards.

Organic produce is from trusted sources. Organic manufacturers are inspected once a year for compliance to the EU and Irish standard. This includes ourselves and all our suppliers.

10. Improve water quality.

As harmful chemicals are not used in organic farming, there is minimal soil, air, and water pollution; thus, ensuring a safer and healthier world for future generations to live in.

Organic means working with nature, not against it. It means higher levels of animal welfare, lower levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers and more environmentally sustainable management of the land and natural environment.  This means more wildlife, more bees, more insects, more birds, better soil and better food!  It’s at the heart of the bigger picture and as we all know – the truth is, if we care about the future of the planet, we need to change the way we behave and organic is an essential part of that change! Whatever you’re buying – when you choose organic, you choose products that promote a better world.
